Checkout

Add a marketing consent checkbox to your store's checkout page and record your customers' agreement for email, WhatsApp and SMS.

To send marketing messages to a customer, by email, on WhatsApp or by SMS, you need their agreement. The best moment to ask is the checkout page, when they already give their email and phone.

The Checkout tab adds a consent checkbox to that page. When the customer ticks it, we record their agreement on their contact profile, for the channels you chose. You can then target them in your WhatsApp campaigns and your segments.

To open it, click Settings in the sidebar, then the Checkout tab. The page is titled Checkout settings and has a Marketing consent section.

Compatible stores

The consent checkbox works with WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Sylius stores. Each compatible store has its own card, with its platform logo and site address. You set up each store separately.

Shopify and Magento do not appear on this page. If none of your stores is compatible, the page shows No compatible store.

Turn on the checkbox

In your store's card, turn on the Enable consent checkbox switch. While it is off, nothing shows on your site.

Choose the channels

Under Affected channels, tick Email, WhatsApp and SMS depending on the messages you plan to send. A customer who ticks the checkbox agrees to every channel ticked here. Email and WhatsApp are ticked to start with.

Set the text and appearance

These settings depend on your platform. They are detailed just below.

Save

Click Save at the bottom of the card. The button stays greyed out until something changes.

Delay before it shows on your site

Changes can take up to 5 minutes to appear on your site, because the module keeps the configuration in memory for that time. The message at the top of the card reminds you of this.

Set up the checkbox on WooCommerce and Sylius

On these two platforms, we add our own checkbox to the checkout page. You set its text, position and colors.

Label text holds the sentence your customer reads, up to 500 characters. As long as you do not edit it, it adapts to the ticked channels. With Email and WhatsApp, it reads for example "I agree to receive marketing emails and WhatsApp messages. I can unsubscribe at any time.". Once you edit it by hand, it no longer changes when you tick or untick a channel. Remember to update it yourself.

Position places the checkbox Before checkout button or After terms, meaning right after the box where the customer accepts your terms and conditions.

Checked by default shows the checkbox already ticked. The app notes Not recommended in Europe (GDPR). In Europe, marketing consent must come from an action by the customer. A pre-ticked box does not prove that consent. Leave this option unticked if you sell to European customers.

Text color and Checkbox color match the checkbox to your theme colors. Click the color square to pick one, or type a code such as #1a1a1a in the field next to it.

Set up the checkbox on PrestaShop

PrestaShop already has its own newsletter checkbox on the checkout page. We use that checkbox rather than adding a second one. The message in the card reminds you of this. The text and look of the checkbox are managed by your PrestaShop theme.

You therefore only set the activation and the Affected channels. When a customer ticks the PrestaShop newsletter checkbox, we record their agreement for the channels ticked here.

Install the checkbox on a custom checkout

If your checkout page is custom-built, the module cannot add the checkbox to it. Open Manual integration (custom checkout) at the bottom of the card to show the code to install.

Copy the code

Click Copy above the code. The code contains your store's connection code.

Place the checkbox

Paste the code on your checkout page. Add the element <div data-fm-consent></div> where the checkbox should appear. The checkbox uses the text, channels and colors set in the card.

Record the agreement

When the order is placed, your developer calls window.fmRecordConsent(email, phone, orderId) with the email, phone and order number. We then record the customer's answer.

What we record

For each order placed with the checkbox, we keep a record of the customer's answer. It contains their email or phone, their answer, the channels concerned, the checkbox text shown at that moment, the date, the page and the order. This record lets you prove where an agreement came from if a customer disputes it.

When the customer ticks the checkbox, their agreement is added to their contact profile for each channel concerned. Email consent needs an email address, and WhatsApp and SMS consent need a phone number. An order placed without email or phone creates no record.

Marketing consent and cookie consent

This checkbox is about sending marketing messages. It does not replace your cookie banner, which handles visit measurement on your site. The two are set separately. Visit tracking is explained in Site tracking.
